Summary

The biggest science fiction series of the decade comes to an incredible conclusion in the ninth and final novel in James S。A。 Corey’s Hugo-award winning space opera that inspired the Prime Original series。

“An all-time genre classic。” –Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Hugo Award Winner for Best Series

The Laconian Empire has fallen, setting the thirteen hundred solar systems free from the rule of Winston Duarte。 But the ancient enemy that killed the gate builders is awake, and the war against our universe has begun again。

In the dead system of Adro, Elvi Okoye leads a desperate scientific mission to understand what the gate builders were and what destroyed them, even if it means compromising herself and the half-alien children who bear the weight of her investigation。 Through the wide-flung systems of humanity, Colonel Aliana Tanaka hunts for Duarte’s missing daughter。 。 。 and the shattered emperor himself。 And on the Rocinante, James Holden and his crew struggle to build a future for humanity out of the shards and ruins of all that has come before。

As nearly unimaginable forces prepare to annihilate all human life, Holden and a group of unlikely allies discover a last, desperate chance to unite all of humanity, with the promise of a vast galactic civilization free from wars, factions, lies, and secrets if they win。

But the price of victory may be worse than the cost of defeat。

No spoilers: Very satisfying conclusion to my favorite series since I started the Stormlight Archive。 It's hard to compare since this is complete。 It was a very good ride。 I loved the complex world and variety of characters。 My favorite part of this series was the little novellas, and I want those for every series I read now。 They were short and sweet and so much depth to the world and people。 No spoilers: Very satisfying conclusion to my favorite series since I started the Stormlight Archive。 It's hard to compare since this is complete。 It was a very good ride。 I loved the complex world and variety of characters。 My favorite part of this series was the little novellas, and I want those for every series I read now。 They were short and sweet and so much depth to the world and people。 。。。more

I finally made it - finished this grand, sprawling, meandering series。 There were still POV sections I thought were unnecessary, as usual, which made the book feel rather bloated, but that's par for the course at this point。 That's just how The Expanse is - some parts are a slog。 It was weirdly jarring to have Holden's POV referring to him as "Jim," for most of the book, and then go back to "Holden" at the end。 I mean, I get why they did it, but it was still jarring。 All in all, it was a pretty I finally made it - finished this grand, sprawling, meandering series。 There were still POV sections I thought were unnecessary, as usual, which made the book feel rather bloated, but that's par for the course at this point。 That's just how The Expanse is - some parts are a slog。 It was weirdly jarring to have Holden's POV referring to him as "Jim," for most of the book, and then go back to "Holden" at the end。 I mean, I get why they did it, but it was still jarring。 All in all, it was a pretty good ending to a pretty good series。 。。。more

A great conclusion to an epic series of books。

I really enjoyed how the series wrapped up the threads for an ending。 The biggest mystery the whole series has been what exactly the origin of the protomolecule was, and the author made a plausible version of what it was and why it made the modifications to people it did。 Some questions are left on the table, which they should be in sci-fi。 Very much recommend finishing the series。

"。。。 a species of beautiful idiots。”Loved it!!Leviathan Falls had the feel of The Fall of Hyperion, but better because I care about these characters so much more。 I just have the short story collection to read, and that'll be it for The Expanse。 (Genuinely sad about that btw。。。) "。。。 a species of beautiful idiots。”Loved it!!Leviathan Falls had the feel of The Fall of Hyperion, but better because I care about these characters so much more。 I just have the short story collection to read, and that'll be it for The Expanse。 (Genuinely sad about that btw。。。) 。。。more

As with most epic stories they do need to come to a close at some point。 This ending was very fitting and the shutting down of the gates made it more so。 I thought the TV series did well in portraying this story, but wished it did give up on the last three novels (instead sort of condensing them) and the random killing of Alex belittled the key role he played。 Also, skipping the whole Laconia story meant no Bobby Draper checking out in a blaze of glory taking on a Laconian Battle ship with an as As with most epic stories they do need to come to a close at some point。 This ending was very fitting and the shutting down of the gates made it more so。 I thought the TV series did well in portraying this story, but wished it did give up on the last three novels (instead sort of condensing them) and the random killing of Alex belittled the key role he played。 Also, skipping the whole Laconia story meant no Bobby Draper checking out in a blaze of glory taking on a Laconian Battle ship with an assault rifle。 But nothing new with that… the books are almost always way better than the shows they inspire。 Cheers! 。。。more

It took a while, but the story did come together nicely at the end。 The authors deserve a tremendous amount of credit for pulling together all the threads and characters of their series。 Towards the end of the book you could imagine that this is how they had imagined the series would conclude when they started writing it which is a testament to their skill and ability to stick with such a long and complicated creative endeavor。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。

Holy cats。 I loved the patch that the last few books took。 While there were some "cliché" points, none of the characters felt forced or used to make the story happen。 Im truly happy to say I read this whole series。 Holy cats。 I loved the patch that the last few books took。 While there were some "cliché" points, none of the characters felt forced or used to make the story happen。 Im truly happy to say I read this whole series。 。。。more

The ending felt a little rushed for such an expansive story idea (no pun intended)。 The fact Amos lived makes me happy, and the fact that I’m now completely done with this series makes me a little :’) I started it in August 2021, and this series kept me connected during the worst year of my life, and for that I’m very grateful。 I can’t wait to get my “Doors & Corners” tattoo!

This book was a great end to the series。 As many of the later books have been, this is filled with political posturing and personal drive versus the earlier world ending events。 This is lower on my list of the individual books throughout the series, but ties it up nicely with a great resolution to the story of the expanded universe。

Satisfying ending to a great sci fi series。 Often soft sci fi masquerading as hard sci fi, but I don’t give a damn, I liked the characters and the space travel

I think I need therapy or a support group, now that I've finished the magnificent series。 A solid, bittersweet ending, though the novel itself was one of the weakest in the series。 I think I need therapy or a support group, now that I've finished the magnificent series。 A solid, bittersweet ending, though the novel itself was one of the weakest in the series。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Leviathan Falls is a tough book to review, because the prospect of a finale for The Expanse forces the reader to contend with the ways Corey is limited as a writing team。 The two of them are not, in any sense, bad writers, but they are limited in terms of their ability to really dive into character work (basically every POV character talks and thinks the same way), as well as their limited imagination when it comes to the sci-fi concepts that stretch beyond the realm of hard science-fiction。 Leviathan Falls is a tough book to review, because the prospect of a finale for The Expanse forces the reader to contend with the ways Corey is limited as a writing team。 The two of them are not, in any sense, bad writers, but they are limited in terms of their ability to really dive into character work (basically every POV character talks and thinks the same way), as well as their limited imagination when it comes to the sci-fi concepts that stretch beyond the realm of hard science-fiction。The Expanse was always at its best when it was firmly in our solar system, dealing with the interpolitical drama of Earth, Mars, and the Belt。 When it left the solar system in Abbadon's Gate and Cibola Burn , the authors had the luxury of being able to leave much undefined; the characters were in the dark as much as we were, and the action in Cibola Burn was limited to one planet。 Then they returned to our solar system for quite some time, and these threads weren't truly picked up until Tiamat's Wrath, when we at last returned to some extrasolar worlds。 Leviathan Falls ends up feeling like a strange mix of sequel and epilogue to Tiamat's Wrath; it has a strange problem where it has BIG questions and plotlines to deal with (Laconia, the so-called "dark gods," POV character endings, the future of humanity), but then spends the first four hundred or so pages kind of dancing around it, shuttling from system to system until at last we get a confrontation, which is unfortunately set again in a familiar milieu (the third time this series has had a climax in this setting), which is ultimately pretty satisfying。 The ending itself does actually work for me; it's not wholly unpredictable, but I like the consequences and decisions people have to make。 I wish we had a little bit more of an epilogue; several characters go without any true sense of closure, and the true epilogue, while fun, doesn't exactly answer many questions - it just makes me wish I was reading that story instead。 I know there's Memory's Legion, which will really have to impress me if that's where they wanted to leave off。A final word of praise for Tanaka; she was the most interesting POV in a long time, and it's a shame we didn't get to spend more time with her。 "Hateful sociopathic soldier" is an interesting break from the too-common "quippy mercenary"- type this series loves。Final mainline Expanse Ranking:Cibola BurnBabylon's AshesAbaddon's GateLeviathan WakesPersepolis RisingNemesis GamesCaliban's WarLeviathan FallsTiamat's Wrath 。。。more

How do you end a 9-book series that has spanned decades, reinvented and pivoted across the stars? With S。A。 Corey at the helm, the answer is obvious - with a bang。 An absolutely stellar conclusion to a sci-fi tale of epic proportions。

Kind of uneven finale to the whole Expanse in myopinion。 And definitely a melancholy ending。It had some very good battle scenes but the wholemystery of the protomolecule was a bit confusing。

A satisfying end to the story。 Most of my questions were answered。 A little annoying that one of the lovely, unexpected surprises of #8 was negated, but the ending worked for me。 This one returned to being largely predictable with most story directions pretty heavily foreshadowed, but I have been all-in on this story for a while now, so, all good。 And the Epilogue was cool。

Sadly, the last book of this incredible series。 I’m sad there aren’t more, but the story arcs all closed and all good things must end。 This also marks my last book of my 2022 reading goal。 Great to end it on a high note!

I loved the whole series so much and I am so saddened that I have finished all 9 books, that I feel just puting some words into a review won't do it any justice。Nevertheless。。。WOW, what an incredible ride this has been。 I couldn't believe at the end of book 8 that the authors will be able to wrap it up in just one book and I mantained this feeling untill the end。 But even though they didn't dive to deep into the story of the "black gods", the managed to have a satisfying conclusion。 I absolutely I loved the whole series so much and I am so saddened that I have finished all 9 books, that I feel just puting some words into a review won't do it any justice。Nevertheless。。。WOW, what an incredible ride this has been。 I couldn't believe at the end of book 8 that the authors will be able to wrap it up in just one book and I mantained this feeling untill the end。 But even though they didn't dive to deep into the story of the "black gods", the managed to have a satisfying conclusion。 I absolutely enjoyed passages like "Before the next word came, Elvi's awareness widened like its jaw had unhinged, and she exploded into white" and would have loved to see more of this。 I feel that there is still so much that could be said in the Expanse universe and a little bit of me hopes that there will be a 10th book at some point but nontheless I am extremely happy that I have found and read this incredible series。PS Amos' character was probably my favourite right up till the end, but I still had some mixed feelings about the whole "strange dogs" transformation, which in itself was very cool。Luckily I can still delve into the Expanse universe for a while with the story collection book, Memory's Legion。 。。。more
